This awesome NES RPG/survival horror game is actually based on the Japanese horror movie of the same name. Some diehard Resident Evil fans believe that game is the predecessor to the entire series. That is not true. Sweet Home is a licensed game and has nothing to do with RE. Shinji Mikami didn't start making games for Capcom until 1990, a year after this was released. He used this game as a "blueprint" while he was making the original RE.
This was only released in Japan for very obvious reasons. Nintendo of America at the time was very strict with gory video game violence and console RPGs in the US weren't near as big as they are today.

An excellent RPG for the Famicom that was going to have a North American release in 1991 under the name "Earthbound" but Nintendo canceled it in favor for the SNES launch. Somehow, they allowed Mother 2 to be released here later on and called that "Earthbound" instead. Sadly that game sold terribly in the US thanks to common interest of 32-bit games. Because of that Nintendo was very hesitant to bring the Mother 1&2 compilation and Mother 3 for the GBA in North America.

Third game in the popular Japanese RPG series. When this game was released over in Japan at the time, many kids actually skipped school go buy a copy of the game! When stores ran out of copies, riots occured. Ever since that incident, the Japanese diet signed a law that makes stores only sell Dragon Quest games on weekends.
