tora! tora! tora! - attack

This is the scene that follows on immediately from the intermission. I haven't edited any of the clips, but I have changed the soundtrack on the last two minutes to Hans Zimmer's wonderful "Attack" piece from the film "Pearl Harbour". Tora! Tora! Tora! is an American-Japanese film made in 1970 that, unlike it's successor Pearl Harbour, portrays events from an accurate and a fair point of the view. For historians, WWII and/or Naval enthusiasts, this is simply a film you cannot miss. If you enjoyed Pearl Harbour then you will almost certainly love this film. For those who are curious, the Admiral you see in this film (who bares striking resemblance to the actor who played Yamamoto in Pearl Harbour) is Nagumo, and the vessel is the Imperial Japanese Carrier Akagi. All in all, six fleet Aircraft Carriers participated in the attack. Contrary to popular belief, Admiral Yamamoto commanded the attack from the IJN Nagato in Tokyo, not the IJN Akagi.

intro sequence to "tora! tora! tora!" (1970)

This is the entire 3 minute 26 second opening credit sequence to the 1970 film "Tora! Tora! Tora!". Directed by Richard Fleischer, Kinji Fukasaku and Toshio Masuda and produced by Elmo Williams, the film told the story of the Japanese attack on the US Navy fleet at Pearl Harbour in 1941. Starring Martin Balsam, Sô Yamamura and Jason Robards, the film was a 2 and 1 quarter hour docu-drama that was, at the time, the most expensive film ever made. It featured ambitious live-action special effects and incredible model-making - the ship seen in this sequence is, you guessed it, a life-sized model. The score was provided by Jerry Goldsmith - I regard it to be one of the best film scores ever. "Tora! Tora! Tora!" never did well at the box office - despite some controversy over budgets and directors (famed and popular director Akira Kurosawa was fired part-way through the production) - and has faded into relative obscurity. Apologies for the low quality - YouTube's own compression has been unusually harsh.
