old colony line turns 10
3:09
Rockland student Amy Butkiewicz was on the Abington commuter-rail station platform on a recent weekday, waiting for an inbound train with her hometown friend, Tiffany Hurlbut. Both take the Old Colony line into Boston for college classes -- Hurlbut at the Harvard School of Education, Butkiewicz at Massachusetts College of Art.
"No way would I drive into Boston," Butkiewicz said, as the silver and purple engine and cars glided to the briefest of midday stops for them and a pair of other riders.
She and Hurlbut were in middle school they were 12 thenwhen the line re-opened on Sept. 29, 1997. Since then it has become a familiar part of life for them and thousands of other south of Boston commuters.
But a decade later, the Old Colony's long-term effect on the area and its riders remains uncertain. Assessing the rail line's impact takes on added significance given the scheduled Oct. 31 start of Greenbush trains -- and how those could affect Weymouth, Hingham, Cohasset and Scituate.
Up and down the Kingston-Plymouth and Middleboro- Lakeville lines, the train has helped stimulate more home building, higher property values and a scattering of new businesses. Over the coming decade, a small village of apartments, condominiums and retail stores is expected to fill a 100-acre tract next to the Kingston station.
"The train has had an impact, no doubt," Kingston town planner Thomas Bott said. タグ:ghsvidghsnevidpatriotledgerquincy 投稿日: September 22, 2007, 5:58 am 閲覧数: 1193 投票: 3.00(5点満点) 2 人の平均
