This McNeilus rear-loader is very sick. It seems to have multiple problems including a very thrashed packer blade, worn roller-bearings on the guides and some serious hydraulic issues. With all this, it continues to run it's route, crushing up everything that is tossed into its hopper, though at slower speed than usual. This is one of my favorite stops because there are two next-door neighbors who both have multiple kids in diapers and baby-sit as well. They each toss out large 33-gallon bags full of diapers each week and are cool about me saving them if I want. One of the moms made this week very special by putting all the stuffed animals they were throwing away inside the clear plastic diaper bag. She knows I like stuff like this so, since she was throwing all the old ones out to make room for the new ones her kids got for Christmas, she decided to toss them into the diaper bag for me. We talked about my little diaper thing quite a few times in the past and how I like old stuffed animals as well, especially if they are soaked in diaper-goo. I am finding more and more moms who are pretty cool about this, especially if the opportunity opens up where you can communicate so they realize that you are not a threat of any kind. This particular mom walked up on me once a while back as I was saving the diapers from her bin. I quickly let the bag go and acted like I was doing something else but she said "it's OK, you can take the diapers if you want them. I already know you have been saving them for quite a while." Then she asked why I save them. The first time I did not say much but she comes out and talks to me quite a bit and I have opened up to her over time and she has been pretty cool about the whole thing with me. OK, back to the trash truck. I got there late, just as the truck was preparing to squish them but the truck was in such bad shape it ran several packer cycles on them and then the packer got stuck in the open position for a couple minutes so I pulled them out. The second stop always uses those Glad stretch bags but they use the very think contractor ones. I think they also rinse their diapers or they just have some very heavy wetters because the bag is usually so heavy I can hardly pull it from the bin and carry it. Since the truck was already there and it usually takes me a couple minutes to get it out of the bin, I decided to let the truck dump the bin and squish the bag of soaked diapers so I could shoot some video of it, since I knew the truck was too sick to pack it very quickly so I could save it before it was completely gone. After several cycles I pulled it to safety and got some shots of what was left of the diapers inside. As you can see by the shot of the diapers after they were saved, this truck might sound sick but it still packs a tight load.
I'll bet those operators were miserable by the end of their route though because this truck makes dumping the bins a real pain. The packer was so messed up that it took several minutes and usually two to three cycles to clear the hopper each time. I hope they got this fixed before their next route!
I wish the video was better but it is pretty hard to get good shots when things like this get you so excited...

This week I found a new organization that is recycling disposable diapers in our area and using the reclaimed plastic to manufacture plastic pallets. I am going to do all I can to keep as many diapers as possible from ending up in a landfill where they sit decomposing for 500-years or from going to an incinerator where they release deadly dioxins into the air. They don't do any good in a waste-to-energy plant either because they don't create any energy at all; just cold spots because they are wet. Time to be more responsible and recycle them and since I like to save them anyway, I think I can make a big difference here!
