In 1982, Julie Moss became worldwide famous during the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, in which she competed as part of her research for her exercise physiology thesis. At approximately two miles before the finish line, she came severely dehydrated. She staggered and crawled towards the end of the course, only to be passed moments before the finish line by Kathleen McCartney. Here's the famous bongo and flute arrangement of "Falling In Love With Love" which Dinah recorded on her first Capitol album, "Dinah, Yes Indeed!" in 1959. This performance predates that by a year, having taken place on the February 21, 1958 live broadcast of "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show." Nelson Riddle conducted that album, but this arrangement was originally done by Harry Zimmerman, who was known for his exotic takes on the standard songbook, and who conducted Dinah's show for many seasons. Notice at the beginning that when Dinah moves downstage and the checkerboard backdrop raises from the floor that Jack Costanzo, "Mr. Bongos" himself, and Julie Kinsler on flute are on islands in a shallow pool of water. This was an imaginative and frugal use of the elaborate set that had been built for a Marge and Gower Champion dance number that preceded Dinah's solo on this Rodgers & Hart classic.
This show was originally broadcast in color and unfortunately I don't believe any color record of it exists anymore. I'd love to see how this one looked. Color videotape was used starting in 1959, and those shows thankfully still exist and have been preserved by the Dinah Shore Estate, but the pre-59 color shows were apparently destroyed in the '80s because NBC needed the space for storage and the machinery used to play them back no longer existed.
