Your diaphragm is a muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen and helps you to breathe. Normally, the diaphragm has an opening for the esophagus to pass through where it connects with the stomach. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes upward through this small opening. Your hiatal hernia may be causing considerable discomfort, with symptoms like heartburn, difficulty swallowing, chest pain and belching. The reasons why hiatal hernias form are not known, but they are quite common. A hernia is dangerous only if it becomes strangulated. That means that the portion of the stomach that is pushed up into the chest may become pinched - preventing blood from reaching it. If this happens, you may require emergency surgery to restore blood flow and to repair the hernia. Luckily, the vast majority of hernias are not considered to be emergencies. However, if you should ever feel a sudden onset of severe pain in your chest or stomach, you should seek medical attention immediately. So make sure that you ask your doctor to carefully explain the reasons behind this recommendation.

Esther Penninkhof gaat, nu acht jaar geleden, voor een 'onschuldige' hernia- operatie naar het ziekenhuis. Door een opeenstapeling van medische fouten overlijdt ze 10 uur na de operatie. In deze tweede aflevering van Missers vertellen de ouders wat Esther is overkomen. Dit voorjaar, ruim zeven jaar na de tragedie, belt de arts van Esther hen plotseling op. Esther Penninkhof (24) wordt geopereerd aan een dubbele hernia. Tijdens de operatie daalt haar bloeddruk plotseling en daardoor raakt ze in een zogenaamde medische shock. Een situatie die niet levensbedreigend is als er adequaat op wordt gereageerd. Maar dat gebeurt niet. Na de operatie gaat ze wegens plaatsgebrek naar een andere afdeling. De dienstdoende arts is daarvan niet op de hoogte en controleert haar niet. Bovendien heeft de opererende arts geen melding gemaakt van de complicaties tijdens de operatie. De dienstdoende arts die daarna voor haar verantwoordelijk is, gaat aan het einde van de dag naar huis. De verpleging belt de arts vier keer om te vertellen hoe slecht het met Esther gaat. Maar de arts komt niet. Esther krijgt infuusvloeistof om de lage bloeddruk te bestrijden. De verpleging gaat op eigen initiatief handelen. Zij vergeten te kijken hoeveel Esther uitplast en hoeveel vloeistof ze eerder toegediend heeft gekregen. Esther kan haar vocht niet uitplassen maar krijgt wel steeds nieuwe toegediend.Uiteindelijk overlijdt Esther 's nachts nadat haar vijf en een halve liter infuusvloeistof is toegediend. De doodsoorzaak luidt: 'overvulling'. De dienstdoende arts is door het Medisch Tuchtcollege berispt. In aflevering twee van Missers vertellen de ouders over het verlies van hun dochter en hun juridische strijd om de arts gestraft te krijgen. Een straf die volgens de ouders te laag is. Wat hen wel hielp is dat de arts, zeven jaar na de dood van Esther plotseling opbelt met een spijtbetuiging.
