Hwang Sun-Hong would be remembered as one of the most prolific goal scorer for the Korean side. Only second to Cha Bum-Kun(55) in goals scored, Hwang has made four World Cup appearances and scored 50 goals in 103 matches. Having lost his mother at the age of eight, he started football to forget his yearning for mother. In middle school his father got in an accident which crippled his legs, yet Hwang's father went to every matches he played and supported him.
On Nov.7, 1988 along with Hong Myong-Bo, Hwang Sun-Hong was selected for the National Team. He made debut against Japan on December 6, 1988. In 1991 Hwang boycotted K-League draft system with Hong Myung-Bo as a youngster to play in Europe, where he joined 2. Bundesliga outfit Wuppertaler SV Borussia. He scored 3 goals in 9 appearances until he injured his knee. After his brief spell in Europe, Hwang spent much of his career in the J-league and enjoyed his most prolific season with Cerezo Osaka in 1999.
During Hwang's football career up till late 90's he was faced with many injuries and slanders from the media. Despite all that he was selected for the 2002 World Cup National member. His interview before the 2002 World Cup he said "I must go back to Korea... there are still a lot of people who disapprove of me. I want to change their minds. I will retire when they have approved of me." Hwang scored the first opening goal against Poland and helped his side reach to the semi-finals.
