Amon Adonai Santos de Araujo Tobin was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He acquired the surname Tobin from his Irish stepfather. After travelling back and forth between Brazil and Portugal, he eventually relocated to England at an early age, where hip hop, jungle, blues and jazz caught his interest. He released four EPs and an album, Adventures in Foam, under Cujo moniker which he borrowed from a Stephen King novel, before he signed with Ninja Tune in late 1996. He has since released six critically acclaimed albums under his own name. He is well known for his song "Saboteur", which was featured as the main theme for the 2003 movie The Italian Job, along with the opening credits theme 'Slowly' in éS Footwear's 2000 skateboarding epic Menikmati. After a three-year hiatus from releasing any major original work, he was contracted by video game company Ubisoft to compose the soundtrack for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, released in 2005. Tobin is perhaps best known for his creative use of sampling. He uses everything from old recordings to motorcycles (Foley Room) and even the acoustics of buildings (Out From Out Where) and stretches and skews them often beyond recognition. Resonances, delays, reverbs and a wide variety of sound effects also contribute to transform what was once familiar into something grotesque and unnatural. Psychedelic ambiences are frequently blended with retro-jazz beats, creating a barrier of apparently incoherent sound layers. This uniqueness and complexity make the task of categorizing his music a difficult one. Each of his albums introduces new polyrhythms and soundscapes. Peace

Made by Maria26 Jiles Perry "J. P." Richardson, Jr. (October 24, 1930 -- February 3, 1959), called JP by friends but commonly known as The Big Bopper, was an American disc jockey who parlayed a big voice and exuberant personality into a career as an early rock and roll star. He is best known for his song "Chantilly Lace". Richardson was born in Sabine Pass, Texas, the oldest son of Jiles Perry, Sr. and Elise (Stalsby) Richardson. His father was an oil field worker and driller. He had two younger brothers, Cecil and James. Within a short time the family moved to Beaumont, Texas. He graduated from Beaumont High School in 1947 and was a member of the "Royal Purple" football team, wearing number "85" as a defensive lineman. Hellooo Baby!: The Best of the Big Bopper, 1954--1959, Rhino / Wea RecordsRichardson later studied pre-law at Lamar College, and was a member of the band and chorus. During this time he worked part time at KTRM radio, where in 1949 he was hired full-time and left school. On April 18, 1952, Richardson married Adrianne Joy Fryou from Montegut, Louisiana; in December 1953 their daughter, Debra Joy, was born. Earlier that year Richardson was promoted to Supervisor of Announcers at KTRM. In March 1955 he was drafted into the United States Army. His basic training was at Fort Ord, California after which Richardson spent two years as a radar instructor at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Upon his discharge at the rank of Corporal in March 1957, Richardson returned to KTRM radio, where he held down the "Dishwashers' Serenade" shift from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. One of the station's sponsors wanted Richardson for a new time slot and suggested a gimmick for the show. Richardson noticed all the college kids doing a dance called The Bop, so he decided to become known as "The Big Bopper". He kicked off a new radio show from 3 to 6 p.m., and soon The Big Bopper became the station's program director.

horse racing oddity: jockey misjudges distance

http://www.horseracegame.com For some reason I find oddities like this May 16, 2004 race very entertaining. The Hasta la Vista Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona is run at what today is an unusually long distance of 1 7/8 miles. This requires two full circuits of the course, rather than the usual one time around in most races. Unfortunately for jockey Jorge Carreno, he forgets that minor detail, creating a very unusual sitation. On a personal note, in the early 1980s, I recall Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez falling victim to the same mental lapse in the 2 1/4 mile Display Handicap at Aqueduct. My father and I got a big kick out of the fans watching the replay cheering "come on Georgie" the first time around, as he was furiously whipping and driving despite having a mile left to run.

This excellent race is already on YouTube, courtesy of cf1970. I'm posting this version because it includes the additional footage of Seattle Slew breaking through the starting gate before the race. It also includes extra coverage at the end of the race, including a slow motion replay of the final sixteenth. After breaking through the gate, Slew didn't go nearly as far down the track as my stunned memory from 1978. Still, it would be hard to spin it as a positive, especially in a race that was decided by inches. Nice athletic job by Cordero to reign in Slew, especially after he reared. I wonder if the unnerving delay of nearly a minute contributed to the frantic pace, by Slew and Affirmed along with rabbit Life's Hope? Someone on another site tried to claim the speed figure on this race was poor. That sounds preposterous to me. The final time was 2:27 1/5. You can see it was hardly an ideal dry and fast track. Check out the surface when Slew is being brought around and reloaded. Andrew Beyer wrote in his post race article that the time was "excellent." The fractions themselves are intriguing. After the masochistic 1:09 2/5, the next quarter plummeted all the way to :26 flat. The horses in front were spent and Cordero was obviously trying to give Slew a breather, worried about Affirmed. If you look at the tape, Cordero looks to his inside entering the top of the stretch and sees Exceller and Shoemaker flying at him. Only then does he noticeably urge Slew, and the two horses quickly draw well clear of Affirmed. The fifth quarter was slow at :26 2/5 but the final quarter was a much faster and respectable :25 2/5. BTW, I believe every Seattle Slew race has now been posted on YouTube, with the high profile exception of the 1977 Preakness. I have a tape of that race but it is flawed, a big missing gap of about 10-12 seconds at the top of the stretch. I have been unable to find a complete copy.

Shaquille O'Neal as a Jockey for Vitamin Water. Ugh. Too involved, too loud, too busy, and too long. The only laugh comes at the last second when a giant horse hoof stomps in by the logo, with TRY IT! Apparently, Shaq was pretty confident that this ad would be a hit: "I put my house on the line that people are going to remember a 321-pound basketball player riding a horse." Rohan Oza, Glaceau's senior vice president of marketing agrees: "It's the right thing to do...it's what people are drinking today." Not right enough, Rohan.
