The assumed victory just seems to go out of reach. *Since the inauguration of Felipe Calderon as the president of Mexico in 2006, Calderon has kept a high approval rate on his war against drug cartels and organized crimes. Calderon has set thousands of military and federal police to fight the drug traffickers in the states where the cartels waged the most influence, mostly in central and northern Mexico. However, the government's crackdown met a harsh response resulting to thousands of people being killed, including assassinations of several high-level and mid-level federal police officers. The drug cartels methods of retaliation became more brutal and now uses machine guns, grenades, barrels of acid and even beheadings have become a popular method. February 1995 In March 1994 the heir to the Mexican presidency Luis Donaldo Colosio was assassinated in Tijuana. Only now is it becoming clear who was responsible. This in-depth report shows the extent to which Mexico's drug cartels have infiltrated Mexican politics. The corruption goes to the heart of the country's ruling political party, the PRI. We speak to Eduardo Valle (The Owl), Mexico's special prosecutor for the Federal Attorney General, now in hiding. Even the police are involved and exclusive footage shows the carnage left after police factions battled for control of profits and sectors of the drug industry. A former cartel insider turned FBI informer confirms the corruption. We profile PRI secretary-general Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, assassinated in September 1994 because he knew too much. His surviving wife says that President Carlos Salinas de Gortari helped them until he too came under pressure from the party to stop messing with Mexico's $30 billion a year drug industry.

The presidential elections are over, but the real battle over Mexico's future is being fought outside of electoral politics. Two powerful figures have launched other kinds of political campaigns here. The multibillionaire Carlos Slim and the guerrilla leader Subcomandante Marcos are facing off in the struggle between the Mexico above and the Mexico below. Carlos Slim is the richest man in Latin America and third richest man in the world. He made most of his fortune off of the controversial privatization of the national telephone monopoly, TELMEX. Slim has used his profits from TELMEX to build a massive economic empire that stretches across Latin America and into the US and Canada. DENISE DRESSER: We have witnessed a massive transfer of wealth from the citizens of this country into his coffers. It's frequently said that Mexicans could not carry out an economic transaction on a daily basis without encountering one tentacle or other of Carlos Slim's multifaceted empire. NARRATION: Slim is the symbol of Mexico's business class and is seen by some as the potential savior of Mexico's struggling economy. CARLOS SLIM: Mexico can join the new world but public resources are insufficient for sustained development. The fundamental point is that private investment needs to be considered, even in public services. NARRATION: Subcomandante Marcos is the ski-masked spokesperson for the Zapatistas, an indigenous guerrilla army. The Zapatistas have fought off the Mexican military for 12 years and have built an independent territory outside of government control. Marcos and the Zapatistas have become the inspiration for left-wing movements across Mexico. SUBCOMANDATE MARCOS: We rose up against the national power, and we discovered that it did not exist. In reality we were up against big financial power which is what makes the decisions in Mexico. NARRATION: Marcos and Slim are campaigning for competing visions of Mexico's future. Slim's vision is articulated in 'The Chapultepec Pact' - a set of economic and political guidelines he drafted to create an environment favorable to investment in Mexico. The Pact calls for greater private investment in the public sector, like the oil industry, deregulation, and government investment in infrastructure, social and health care projects. Slim is traveling the country campaigning for the Pact...gathering support from 31 State governors, national politicians, business associations,religious figures including the Archbishop of Mexico and major media outlets.

Original "butterfly" version now posted in my videos. Berlin's top DJ and all round good egg tries to be cool in the sweltering heat of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. This is the PG version. The X rated version features butterflies on Paul's face...he didn't like the butterflies much. The true stars of this video are obviosly the two young girls playing football (Up the Boro), and the beach at Xpuha....sadly that is now home to an all inclusive resort (booo hisss). Thanks to Xcaret eco park for the spiffing caves and all that. Timecode on this copy. I hope to get a clean version soon.
