Con una facilidad portentosa, creó una pintura serena y apacible, como su propio carácter, en la que priman el equilibrio compositivo y expresivo, y la delicadeza y el candor de sus modelos, nunca conmovidos por sentimientos extremos. Murillo nació en Sevilla, donde pasó la mayor parte de su vida, en 1617, posiblemente en los últimos días del año ya que fue bautizado el 1 de enero de 1618 en la iglesia de la Magdalena. La situación económica de la familia era bastante aceptable y el futuro pintor se criaría sin estrecheces. Pero en cuestión de un año fallece el padre y la madre por lo que el joven Bartolomé pasará al cuidado de su hermana Ana. Murillo inicia su aprendizaje artístico con Juan del Castillo, en cuyo taller permanecerá cinco años. Los primeros cuadros de Murillo están muy influidos por el estilo del maestro, como se puede apreciar en la Virgen del Rosario con santo Domingo. En 1645 Murillo recibe su primer encargo de importancia. Se trata de la serie de trece lienzos para el Claustro Chico del convento de San Francisco en Sevilla. En estas obras muestra una notable influencia de Van Dyck, Tiziano y Rubens, lo que hace pensar a algunos en un posible viaje a Madrid, aunque no existe base documental para apoyar esta teoría. Este año de 1645 será de gran importancia para el artista porque se casa el 26 de febrero. La elegida se llamaba Beatriz Cabrera y Villalobos, joven sevillana de 22 años. En los 18 años que duró el matrimonio tuvieron una amplia descendencia: un total de nueve hijos. El éxito alcanzado con la serie del Claustro Chico -al aportar un estilo más novedoso que los veteranos Herrera el Viejo o Zurbarán- motivará el aumento del número de encargos. Por ello en 1646 ingresa en su taller un joven aprendiz al tiempo que debe buscar una casa más amplia para organizar un taller. La crisis económica que vive Sevilla en 1650 no impide que los encargos continúen a buen ritmo, siendo uno de los más importantes el enorme lienzo de la Inmaculada Concepción para la iglesia de los Franciscanos, llamada "La Grande" por su tamaño. En 1658 se traslada a Madrid, donde es muy probable que conociese a Velázquez, quien le pondría en contacto con las colecciones reales, donde tomaría contacto con la pintura flamenca y veneciana. A finales de año, Murillo está de nuevo en Sevilla, apareciendo como vecino de la parroquia de Santa Cruz donde permaneció hasta 1663, que se trasladaría a la de San Bartolomé....
