pororoca phenomenon

The pororoca is a tidal bore up to 4 meters high that travels upstream the Amazon River. Its name comes from the indigenous Tupi language, where it translates into "great destructive noise". It occurs at the mouth of the river where river water meets the Atlantic Ocean. The phenomenon is best seen in February and March, where waves up to 4 meters rolling for up to 35 minutes have been observed.

Enquanto os habitantes da região protegem seus rebanhos da força destrutiva da pororoca, desportistas vindas de longe desafiam a natureza surfando as ondas que se formam pelo encontro das águas, quando as marés oceânicas invadem a foz de alguns dos grandes rios brasileiros. O surf na pororoca é praticado principalmente no rio Amazonas (Pará), no rio Mearim (Maranhão) e no rio Araguari (Amapá). Surfing pororoca While the local inhabitants protect their herds from the destructive force of the pororoca, sportswomen from faraway regions defy nature surfing the waves formed by the meeting of waters when the ocean tides invade the mouth of some of the largest Brazilians rivers.
