Today I present to you a review of Zero Wing which was released in 1989 by Toaplan. It was a side scrolling shooter which had a Mega Drive port that lead to an internet craze but suprizingly enough its a great game. enjoy.

A couple of Toaplan guys were involved in making this game. Lots of Toaplan references as a result. I played on the 2p side to keep the rank down and I don't really get creative with the weapons but if you guys want to see the other types of ships, let me know. Nail-bitingly intense shooter from Toaplan for the Sega Genesis. Game features two game play modes. Grind Stormer - Salamander style weapon system. Pick up the different icons to power-up. Bombs are available. V-5 - Japanese version. Gradius/Life Force style power-up system. Collect diamonds to move the power-up grid ahead one space and select how to power up. V-5 is way better in my opinion. Very balanced and more manageable if you die. As with a lot of Toaplan games, it is best to try to one life the game. Certain parts are really hard to recover from if you have no weapons.

Toaplan creates the Zero Wing video game. Toaplan releases a port for the Sega Genesis console with the addition of an intro scene, which is then translated into english (very poorly) and released in the United States. Toaplan goes out of business. Someone from a Zany Video Game Quotes website notices the poor translation, and highlights the game. Overclocked.org does a humorous voiceover of the Zero Wing intro in a fake Wayne Newton voice. Dozens of game-related messageboards begin to post quotes from the parody, and images altered to show the phrase. Most of the threads lose interest and die off quickly as the trend is pronounced dead countless times. The Flash movie/video is released with images from the threads and music taken from the origional game someone had added the phrase "all your base" to. AYB explosively expands to the general (non game messageboard-reading) public. The origional site for the video is shut down within hours due to excessive traffic, and moves to PlanetStarsiege. Lycos ponders how "All your Base" was transformed from obscurity to a top 50 search practically overnight. Mainstream media begin to notice the trend, and stories appear in Time Magazine, USA Today, Fox News, The Los Angeles Times, Tech TV, Wired, and many others. As the 'remix' used in the video goes from 58 hits a day to several thousand per day, mp3.com notices the track has been ripped directly from the video game and pulls the music off their site due to copyright violations. It is later returned unchanged. The trend continues to grow as it expands into nearly every corner of the web. Large websites like Angelfire and Hewlett Packard sneak "all your base" references into their designs. "All Your Base" is pronounced dead several times every day, yet it's 15 minutes of fame continue for some reason...

In 1989 Toaplan converted to the Megadrive their shooting game, and added a anime cutscene intro. It was later released in the west, however, the staff memeber that translanted the intro wasnt very versed inthe english languange... and many years later so was born one of the biggest Internet memes ever: All Your Base Are Belong To Us! There are still some people out there who don't know that its from a Megadrive game!

Recorded with Final Burn Alpha Plus Fast and furious overhead view run-n-gunner by Toaplan. Surprisingly this never got ported to home consoles, Mega Drive or PC Engine CD would've been good candidates to get it! Whatever you do, do NOT let your mind drift off somewhere else while playing this. If I hadn't had that superball, the rest of the game would be straight up AGGRAVATING!!! I apologize about the small break at the beginning of the video. The Spyware remover popped up and interrupted the AVI recording. I give credit to one of my Japanese subscribers for being the first to put footage out for this awesome game.
