Back in 2001, before Harajuku girls became a lame stereotype of Gwen Stefani, back when it was just real outcast girls hanging out in Harajuku flaunting the most rebellious fashions of the time. And me, the original bundangbear was there. You can also see cherry blossoms, Ueno Park, Meota Iwa, Meiji Shrine, and a typical Tokyo apartment, right in Nakano. This was my first trip ever to Asia in March 2001. How much the world has changed, and how much the popularity of Japan and Japanese culture has grown!

day one - arrival! living in ueno, wandering akihabara と shinjuku at night!

Finally, I escape to Japan! I get on the plane at 1:45pm, July 23rd Vancouver time, and arrived at Narita Airport, Japan, at 3:45pm July 24th Tokyo time. The flight took 10 hours, but I don't remember most of it because I slept through it. Took the Narita Express train from Narita Airport to Tokyo, then the Yamanote line to Ueno. Walked 10 minutes to my hostel, unloaded my bags, showered, and went back out for some dinner. After a delicious ramen dinner (awkward because I didn't know the customs, but I'll come with time) I caught the train to Akihabara, or the "Electric City". Lots of cellphones, cameras, laptops etc for sale! Also had a huge building called the Big Apple, which is a multi-storey building for Pachinko. Then I took a train to Shinjuku where I spent the rest of my night just wandering the streets back and forth and looking through the shops. Most of them were closed except for the vending machine ones, and more Pachinko buildings. Most restaurants were still open at 11pm. I got home early because I didn't want to catch the last train... I heard it would be extremely crowded. Showered again, I might go downstairs from my hostel room and hang out in the lounge, or maybe go eat some more... I don't feel like sleeping yet. Walking into a pachinko parlor is an assault on the senses: overwhelmingly bright lights, air thick with cigarette smoke, and the din of caterwauling pachinko machines. Seemingly the Japanese equivalent to slot machines, this mindless game is widespread in Tokyo. A player controls little more than a knob which determines the speed at which little metal balls plink down through array of pins and lights (and some don't even touch the knob at all, they simply feed the machine balls and watch it play itself). Buy little balls to begin playing, try to collect more little balls. Lucky players have stacks of small plastic trays full of metal spheres sitting behind them, the odd spoils of their zombie-like victories.
