The current human rights situation in Burma is ghastly, with the brutal Burmese regime (SPDC) slaughtering and incarcerating peaceful Buddhist monks, nuns, and civilians as they peacefully demonstrated for peace and freedom.
In solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Burma, we Burmese in exile, along with our allies from around the world, are launching a walk for the peace and freedom of Burma. Along with members of the International Peace Walkers and the Japanese Buddhist nun Jun Yasuda, we will start walking from the Peace Pagoda in Grafton, near Albany, New York, on Saturday, October 13, 2007, and arrive on October 24 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City.
Then we will stage a hunger strike in front of the United Nations and the Chinese Embassy, on alternating days, to call world attention to the desperate need in our homeland for peace, justice, and freedom—none of which will ever come to be as long as the SPDC regime is in power.
By committing the crimes of killing, torturing, and arresting Buddhist monks, the regime insults the entire Śāsana (the teachings of Buddha) and all the people of Burma. The recent crackdown in Pakokku city was abominable, beyond understanding in a country that follows Buddha's doctrine. Soldiers raided and attacked Buddhist temples at dark of night, arrested and tortured peaceful Buddhist monks by capturing them with a noose and tying them to a pole in public. Others were killed, their corpses dumped in the jungle.
SPDC is a criminal regime. The world has now witnessed it treating civilians, monks, students, members of the NLD party—which won a landslide victory in the elections of May 1990 but has never been permitted to take its rightful place—and members of other opposition parties abominably. The soil of Burma is scarlet with the blood of monks, students, and ordinary people.
The people of Burma have suffered for decades the cruelty of this regime, and the world has stood by, wringing its hands. The time for inaction is long past!
We are launching this walk urging the UN's immediate intervention. The following are our demands.
1. Immediate effective intervention by the United Nations to stop the atrocities against the Burmese people, using UN peacekeeping forces if necessary.
2. Immediate release of all Buddhist monks, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, student leaders, and all political prisoners.
3. The institution of a process that will transition the country to democracy, monitored by a UN-appointed international committee.
We invite everyone to join our walk for peace and freedom of Burma, whether for an hour, a day, a week, or the entire time.
