From my PM Magazine days when I was "on-camera-talent." When you are feeling downtrodden or believe life isn't treating you fairly, I hope you'll remember what the subject of this video did with his life. I can not even imagine how I would have "picked myself up" had something as tragic as having your hands blown off, had happened to me. Additionally, I can not imagine that I could have had the audacity, tenacity and fortitude to become very successful in life, as Jay Armes did.
The story of Jay Armes is very remarkable in regard to how he faced life after a tragic accident.
Years ago, I was a co-host for PM Magazine, a nationally syndicated show that aired in major markets here in the USA. I produced many feature stories about unique people. In my several decades working in TV, NONE OF MY NEWS REPORTS OR FEATURE STORIES WERE AS INSPIRING AS THIS STORY JAY ARMES... and I've interviewed many hundreds of people here in the USA, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Africa.
I hope you'll be uplifted by his very unique story and positive outlook and philosophy on life. I certainly was.
As a young boy, Jay lost his hands in an explosion. Ironically (despite having lost the lower part of his arms) his name is Jay J. Armes.
This tragic event could have shattered the life of most people, but not Jay J. Armes. He never let it slow him down ONE BIT, in fact he went on to become a very successful and internationally known Private Investigator.
I had the chance to produce this piece in 1980, when I was a co-host for PM Magazine, a nationally syndicated TV show. Meeting Jay and getting to know his very upbeat and positive personality should inspire everyone to never look back... to look forward and "press on."
People have contacted me have recalled the story about Jay Armes and have told me how they have become inspired.
I regret this video starts and ends abruptly. It was produced on analog videotape that was 27 years old when I transferred it to a digital medium. The tape barely played through my equally as old ¾ inch VCR... So please overlook the bad start and the very abrupt end... First Steps Awards -- Germany's Best Film Students
The entire Germany industry will gather in the Berlinale Palast August 28 for the First Steps Awards, Germany's most important prize for first-time film makers. Student films are awarded prizes in the short film, feature film, documentary and commercials categories. The winners are selected from 217 submitted films. KINO joins the party and takes a look at the winning entries.
Little Big Man -- The Characters of Axel Prahl
Axel Prahl is the face of the so-called "little man" in German cinema. Prahl came to Berlin as a theatre actor in the 1990s. Director Andreas Dresen discovered him, casting him in the supporting role of a policeman in his hit film «Night Shapes». German TV viewers know him for playing another policeman -- an unkempt and unorthodox cop in the well-known TV series Tatort. But Prahl prefers playing the ordinary guy, as he has in prize-winning films such as «Grill Point» (Berlinale Silver Bear, 2002) and as he does again in the new production «You Are Not Alone». KINO with a profile on this extraordinary character actor.

Personalities as diverse as director Wim Wenders, punk rocker Nina Hagen and producers Manfred Salzgeber, Claus Boje and Wieland Speck were all influenced by the little independent theatres. Kino - The German Film Magazine - reporting from the Warsaw International Film Festival. This year, German productions are well represented. One of them is the acclaimed film "And Along Come Tourists" by Robert Thalheim - about a German performing alternative service in Auschwitz.

Germany and Poland share a long and difficult history. The deep scars left by the Second World War are not yet fully healed. But this year's Warsaw festival invited 24 German productions to take part. KINO attended the Polish premiere of «Schröder's Wonderful World», a bizarre tale of an attempt to build a utopian paradise in the border region between Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. We followed Michael Schorr through Warsaw. And we meet up with documentary filmmaker Volker Koepp. He's in Warsaw presenting his film «Sons», which plumbs the depths of German-Polish history through the example of a generation raised in the wreckage of the Second World War. «And Along Come Tourists» debuted to critical praise in Cannes and has just been released in German cinemas. It is the story of a young German who travels to Auschwitz to do community service at a Holocaust memorial centre. «And Along Come Tourists» was invited to compete in Warsaw in the «New Films, New Directors» section of the festival. KINO watches the film and host Monika Jones speaks with the Polish audience after the premier.SHORTCUTS
* «Lissi und der wilde Kaiser» -- After successfully spoofing Westerns and science fiction in his first two films, director Michael «Bully» Herbig has turned on German Heimat films for his latest parody. The rural melodramas of the 1950s are put through the wringer in Herbig's new animated feature, which tells the very un-historic tale of Empress Sissi and her Emperor Franz.
* «Bis zum Ellenbogen» -- As Germany was celebrating the 2006 World Cup, three actor friends Justus von Dohnányi, Jan Josef Liefers and Stefan Kurt were criss-crossing the country producing their first feature film.
* «Pornorama» -- Director Marc Rothemund follows his Oscar-nomiated historic drama «Sophie Scholl -- The Final Days» with a bit of comic relief. «Pornorama» is a look at the sexual education films of the 1960s and stars Benno Fürmann, Tom Schilling and Karoline Herfurth.Poland's Young Film Scene
Poland in October 2007, shortly before a federal election, is a land in upheaval -- both political and economic. It is also a land with a grand film tradition. At the Warsaw Film Festival, KINO took a look at the new generation of Polish filmmakers.
