A coming out party for George Minafer (Tim Holt) spoiled heir of the wealthy Amberson family where he meets the beautiful and down to earth Lucy Morgan (Anne Baxter) daughter of Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotten) inventor and former beau of his mother Isabel Amberson Minafer (Dolores Costello). Released in 1942, Orson Welles' second feature this overlooked masterpiece is unfortunately known more for his dispute with the studio, RKO, over their re-editing and re-shooting his original version due to unfavorable test screenings while he was in Brazil working on another film. Adapted by Welles from Booth Tarkington's 1919 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Magnificent Ambersons brilliantly tells the story fading power of a wealthy family, while portraying the changing historical eras from 19th to 20th century. An excellent example of Welles' genius as meticulous planning and endless rehearsals present the audience with scenes of casual perfection. Nominated for four Academy Awards, preserved at the National Film Registry and often listed among Hollywood's top movies ever made, The Magnificent Ambersons obviously overcame the weakness to its ending wrought by the studio's meddling. A stellar cast led by Joseph Cotton, Welles' personal friend and most likely alter ego, who was never nominated for an Academy yet as he reminded people Welles' favorite film was "Citizen Kane", Hitchcock's "Shadow of A Doubt", and Carol Reed's "The Third Man", and he was in all three. Dolores Costello (Isabel Amberson) was a star of the silent era and part of Hollywood royalty. She came from a family of actors (her father, Maurice Costello, was one of the early silent film matinee idols). Acting with her family she gained her own fame and was known as "The Goddess of the Silent Screen." She married Hollywood legend John Barrymore (1928) and is grandmother to contemporary movie star, actress Drew Barrymore. Though she overcame a lisp to make the transition to "talkies", Costello's career was ended due to the terrible after effects of early make-ups had on her skin. Anne Baxter, who plays Cotten's daughter, Lucy, was the granddaughter of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and grew up in the world of New York luxury and sophistication. She caught the acting bug early and was encouraged by her family to pursue it to the fullest. At the age of sixteen she audition for the Alfred Hitchcock, but was deemed too young for the lead in his upcoming Rebecca. Instead she landed a contract with 20th Century Fox and began a long and productive career, including an Academy Award (1946 Razor's Edge). Tim Holt, who plays the spoiled George Minafer was the son of a silent cowboy star, Jack Holt, followed in his father's footsteps and became a professional actor. Was a decorated bombadier in the Pacific during World War II, and returned to work in Hollywood starring in numerous Westerns, but may well be best remembered starring opposite Bogart in the Treasure of Sierra Madre. He continued to make Westerns until the 50's when the genre lost its popularity, and his career came to an end. American guitarist Al Caiola recorded many movie and TV themes in the 1960s for the United Artists label. This was the "big guitar" sound with bass lead guitar.
Here are themes from 3 of the Magnificent Seven series movies, composed by Elmer Bernstein.
1) The Magnificent Seven. theme for the 1960 movie, recorded as a single by Al Caiola and arranged by Don Costa. a #35 hit in 1960/61.
2) The Return Of The Seven. 1966 by Caiola, a single and album.
3) The Magnificent Seven Ride. music from the opening of the 1972 film. not by Caiola.

I had the pleasure of knowing this horse from day one. When I first laid eyes on him he was filthy and emaciated... but his eyes... those eyes... I saw a diamond in the rough. I saw a partner for my dear friend, Annika. I saw a horse that needed her as much as she needed him.
Valentino, aka "Tino", was an incredibly talented horse who was cherished by his family and his fans. This amazing creature lost his fight on July 4th, 2008, due to a chronic bone infection in his hoof which exacerbated existing lameness issues.
Ever noble, Tino fought a brave battle with his beloved Annika by his side.
Annika writes of Valentino:
"We are mourning the loss of Valentino. It has been a very long and difficult road culminating with the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. To see an animal with so much life left in his body and his mind, yet in so much pain, standing stoically and bravely, and I am left having to determine his fate. A partner that loved to work and loved to please despite the horrible things that were happening within his body, yet he remained steady the best he could. I could see that Valentino could not understand why he could not play with his friends or work with his human. He only stood and watched. Put simply, his body failed him.
Valentino came to us February 14, 2007 sight unseen and based on a video and an online advertisement (no photo). I had Ren video tape a close up of his eyes. I knew from this that he was a sweet horse with a giving heart. I just did not imagine how much he was capable of giving at that time. This would be a horse for my husband but for me to ride in the meantime to help me with my confidence.
He had such presence in size, looks, and his attitude. Even with his big dopey Hanoverian ears and his rat-like tail, he was still an amazingly gorgeous animal. I heard all the time what an amazing horse he was and pair we made. Nobody could believe that he was given up on and "thrown away." He brought me to my first blues on the dressage court and really made me work for my confidence, but in the end, he gave my confidence back to me that which Joost (my Friesian) had taken. My last truly great ride on him was at the Manolo Mendez clinic this past spring. I was beaming after those three days. So proud of our relationship and the work we had accomplished together. So looking forward to the future and what else he could teach me."
**Alas, Valentino's pre-existing lameness problems grew worse and worse, despite Annika's best efforts and the tireless efforts of a fantastic veterinary and farrier team.**
"We made the decision to end his pain on the 4th of July. He had come to be in so much pain in the last few days. The final straw was that his hoof wall and lamina were separating all the way around to the back. Heals were purple and bruised. His foot was falling apart. I had not prepared myself for this. I had put it into my mind that my vet was coming to change the wrap. The pain of making this decision all flooded back to me and I was numb as I drove to get my family. We managed to find someone to help with the kids and my husband was there with me. It really hit me when I cut the braids from his tail.
My vet gave Tino a huge dose of morphine to give him some relief before we let him go, and he still was not able to put weight on that foot. After seeing that the massive dose of morphine did nothing for his pain, she said "this is a small blessing for him." She wept along side with us when he went down. He fell quickly without a fight. He was a true gentleman until the end. She knew what a special horse Valentino was. What a heart he had."
She said "never again will you know another horse like this one. He is a once in a lifetime horse." I know. He was.

Here's a funny Aussie pisstake of the 1961 film "Sword Of Conqueror" done on the Aussie comedy "The Aunty Jack Show" circa 1973. The Aunty Jack Show team play segments of the movie putting their Aussie overdubs in the film to suit the Australian audience. So funny when one of the guys says the skull is a bone shiner beer mug and when she drinks the wine from it everyone yells "down down down down" and later in the film when Herco goes across the spikey rope he says "strewth I wish people would watch where they smash their empty stubbies" and at the ceremony/party Waltzing Matilda gets played hehehe. EVOLVER is an experimental music group from the PNW underground. Their recording studio was deep within a missile silo. There they recorded Suphi Jam and oddities like Magnificent Desolation. Often playing in coffee houses and for their church youth group EVOLVER would push the envolpe of tolerance.
